U.S. Airlines To Ground Over 500 Planes This Fall But, Will It Be Enough!

In 2007, according to the Air Transportation Association, there were approximately 3,972 jets and approximately 2,836 Regional commuter jets and turbo prop planes operated by U.S. airlines.

The major airlines plan to ground about 280 main line jets this fall or 7% of their fleet. Regional jets and turbo props will see about 8% of their fleet or about 220 planes. Now if the average main line jet holds 140 passengers and fly's five times a day, that means you will see a loss of approximately 190,000 seats a day or 71 million seats a year!

Now with our current financial crisis, the expected demand for discretionary travel may drop. We could see more flights grounded in 2009.
